A Polish historian and publicist, Besala devoted much of his work to the history of Poland and, in particular, the world of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. His books brought together careful historical research with stories that could surprise, intrigue and sometimes unsettle the reader.

From his early biographies of Stanisław Żółkiewski and Stefan Batory, to Tajemnice historii Polski, Małżeństwa królewskie, Miłość i strach and his extensive work on the history of alcohol in Poland, he continually found new ways to explore the past.
His work ranged across rulers and soldiers, marriages and affairs, crime and politics, war and everyday life.
But beneath all of it was one enduring fascination:

A lifetime spent looking behind the history
Jerzy Stanisław Besala was born in Warsaw in 1951 and graduated in history from the University of Warsaw.
He initially focused on modern history before turning his attention to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the world of the Rzeczpospolita szlachecka. He became the author of numerous books and hundreds of articles and essays, writing for publications including Polityka, Dziennik Polski, Wiedza i Życie, Focus and Focus Historia.
His subjects were often unconventional.
He wrote about kings, but also about their marriages.
About great historical figures, but also about their weaknesses.
About politics and war, but also about love, fear, desire, crime and the everyday lives of ordinary people.
He understood that the most memorable history is often found in the details that traditional accounts leave at the margins.
History is not distant.
It is human.
